Article summary

Certificates are a fundamental component of security in a BizTalk environment, enabling secure and reliable communication between systems while ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of data transmissions. BizTalk360 has integrated certificate monitoring enabling users to monitor certificates and receive alerts prior to their expiration dates.

Let's consider a company that relies on BizTalk Server for secure electronic data interchange (EDI) with its partners. They use the AS2 protocol for exchanging sensitive business documents such as purchase orders, invoices, and shipping notices. If an AS2 certificate used for EDI communication expires, it can disrupt communication with trading partners without any notice, leading to delays in business operations and potential financial losses.

Proactive monitoring of AS2 certificates enables a company to maintain operational efficiency by identifying and resolving certificate-expiry issues before they impact business continuity. Automated alerts and notifications about certificate expiry help them stay ahead of potential disruptions.

Setting up monitoring for Certificate

  1. Choose the environment and go to Monitoring -> Manage Mapping -> BizTalk Server
  2. Click on the "Certificate" tab to view the certificates.
    • If you see the below screen, then navigate to Environment settings ->Monitoring->Mapping Configurations->Certificates section and follow this article to enable the server for certificates for monitoring.
  3. Upon successful configuration, all the configured certificates in the server will be listed along with the details such as Name, Expiry Date and Store details. If the certificate is associated with EDI parties, then an EDI indication will be shown.
  4. Enabling Monitoring:

       - Select the desired certificate and click on "Enable Monitoring".

       - By default, monitoring is enabled with a 5-day expiry notification period. Adjust the notification period as needed by clicking the 'Expiry Notification' button.

  5. Once activated, the monitoring status will be displayed in the grid, with green indicating health and red indicating expiry .Users will also receive notification reminders for impending expiry.
  6. To disable monitoring, simply click "Disable Monitoring".

Note:
  • As a best practice create a separate alarm for certificate monitoring.
  • When you disable the certificate monitoring for the server, then all the certificates mapped for monitoring in that server will be removed. No notification will be sent further.
  • This feature is available under the Platinum licensing tier.
  • Expiry Date shown in UI is based on the system time zone.
